CHRIST'S WITNESSES PROCLAIM THE RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD: Reformation Celebration November 8, 2020

Of all the challenges Christians face, remaining loyal to the Word of God ranks near the top. On the one hand we encounter the daily pressure of those who openly oppose us, sometimes with verbal or even physical abuse. On the other hand more numerous opportunities to witness are missed or avoided because we lack the courage to stand up for what we believe.

Let today's readings serve as an incentive to be courageous as we witness the Gospel. The famous story of Daniel in the lion’s den is God's first example of faith-filled courage. Daniel was willing to face death rather than compromise his Christian integrity. Matthew details the hatred Christians will endure in an increasingly godless world, but then quickly adds “…but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Loyalty to God and his Word is essential to the practice of faith.

We celebrate Reformation Sunday today. In addition to countless Bible characters who remained loyal under duress are countless Christians in history who did the same. Luther’s loyalty and courage in the face of hatred is timeless: "Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason—I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other—my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen."

Luther's loyalty changed the world. Imagine what yours might do! Rather than fret over how powerful our persecutors are, and remember how powerful God is. Of those two, only one has created you. Only one has redeemed you. Only one sanctifies you. And only one's perfect loyalty to you can inspire your loyalty to Him.

God bless your worship.
