When God Says "Go"

When God Says "Go"

WORKING IN THE LORD'S KINGDOM - Sundays after Pentecost: July 7, 2019

You probably already know that the title "pastor" is the Latin word for "shepherd." In general, a shepherd leads and feeds, guides and cares for a flock of sheep so that they grow into maturity strong and healthy. In the same way, a pastor leads and feeds, guides and cares for a flock of souls so that they progress in their spiritual maturity and grow both strong and healthy.

This week's lessons discuss what it's like to work in God's kingdom, but they especially address the role of the called shepherd. When Jesus called 72 men and sent them to do outreach, he told them their work would be met with a mixed reaction. They were to speak peace to the houses of those who welcomed them, but words of judgment to those who refused the Gospel. Jesus' final advice to his shepherds was not to get too high on the power or authority God gave them as shepherds. Instead, "rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

In his lesson, Peter tackles the proper motivation for serving as a pastor. With a series of "avoid this" and "practice that" statements, Peter coaches pastors to be willing and eager to serve, and to live as examples to their congregations.

Ezekiel serves as a helpful example to each of the other lessons. God sent him out to speak a message against which they would likely bristle - quit your idolatry! The temptation for Ezekiel to soften God's message in order to be liked was very real! Instead, God hardened Ezekiel and made him unafraid of their blowback. Ezekiel remained faithful to God's message.

Working in the Lord's kingdom these days bears a close resemblance to the way it was in Bible times. Be committed to God. Be faithful to his Word. Be shepherds of his flock.
