God Exposes False Priorities Through His Word

Playing hide and seek with a two-year-old is a different experience.  You count to 10, turn around, and there is the kid still standing in front of you!  They don’t even bother to hide.  “If I can’t see you, you can’t see me,” they might say.

In the Gospel, a man comes to Jesus asking what he must do to enter eternal life.  Like a two year old, he didn’t bother to hide his real intentions - bragging about how obedient he had been his whole life.  He was never really interested in Jesus’ answer, but Jesus gave him one anyway.  Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come, follow me (Mark 10:21).  The man went away sad because his false intentions had been exposed.

Another reading tells of Elisha who healed a man named Naaman of his leprosy, a terrible skin disease.  Naaman tried to give Elisha a gift, but Elisha turned it down. Elisha’s servant, however, was greedy.  He chased after Naaman and with false intentions requested the gift.  Later, Elisha exposed his sin and the servant’s skin became leprous.

Playing hide and seek with God is a losing proposition.  The Word of God is living and active, the Bible says.  It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).  The Bible exposes all of our clever hiding spots our false intentions.  Whether he counts to 10 or ten million, we’ll never be able to find a spot to hide from God.  He sees all and holds us accountable.

If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared (Psalm 130:3-4).

God bless your worship.
