2/7/2021 - Christ Came to Reverse the Effects of the Devil

Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

Good leaders not only know how to demonstrate their authority, they also know how to take action. Strong leadership is goal-oriented and focused.  They concentrate on carrying out their mission.  Executing their mission is how leaders put their authority to good use.

Throughout Epiphany, we’ve seen all kinds of people point to Jesus’ authority as the Messiah.  We’ve heard this truth proclaimed by believers, and even by a demon!  Jesus Christ is truly the promised Messiah.  But why did he come?  How did he use his authority?

Isaiah shows that God’s people have always suffered the effects of the devil.  Fatigue, sickness and various afflictions are common examples.  Wrestling with the early effects of sin often causes us a malaise or weariness.  Is God neglecting us?  Where does our strength come from?  Peter teaches that the devil doubles down to destroy us.  He preys on us, prowling around like a roaring lion seeking our end.  Rather than cave into the temptation to question God or doubt his love, Peter urges us to humble ourselves, to cast our anxieties on God and he will lift us up in due time.

Mark’s Gospel shows us clearly why Jesus came to this world.  He heals diseases and casts out demons, and in so doing shows his concern for our bodies.   When word spread and large crowds gathered, Jesus took his disciples and left with the simple explanation, “I have to preach.  That’s the mission God, and has to be my focus.”  More important than healing and health care is the urgent need to salve souls with the Gospel.  The gospel drives away the devil.  The Gospel reverses the effects of the devil in this world.  In good times and bad, we put our trust in Christ, our Savior, who has authority over body and soul.

May God bless your worship.
