4/25/2021 - The Good Shepherd Lays Down His Life for the Sheep

FOURTH SUNDAY IN EASTER

Every year the fourth Sunday in Easter is subtitled, "Good Shepherd Sunday," borrowing from Jesus' famous words in John 10 "I am the Good Shepherd." The 23rd psalm is appointed to be read, and the worshiping congregation enjoys repeating its themes in such familiar and comforting songs like "I am Jesus' little lamb."

Pondering Jesus as our Good Shepherd is comforting, especially since it reveals some stark realities of our spiritual life. Although we seldom realize it, as members of God's flock we are in constant and terrible danger from powerful enemies! Paul implores the elders in Ephesus to keep watch, because savage wolves will scatter the flock. Similarly, John encourages us to test the spirits because a lot of people will lie to us in the name of religion. Even Jesus speaks of the hired hand; he's no shepherd because he doesn't care for the sheep.

How stark the contrast to Jesus, our Good Shepherd. As you worship, count the ways that Jesus loves you! He lays down his life for the sheep. He supervises (watches over) the flock, guides, protects, chases, feeds, warns, fights off enemies, overcomes, knows me personally, loves me every day the same, even calls me by my name. No wonder why the sheep listen to his voice! The King of Love my Shepherd is.

God bless your worship!
