9/13/2020 - How Should I Forgive My Neighbor?

FORGIVE AS GOD FORGIVES: September 13, 2020

Many have noted that America is a melting pot. Because of our unique constitution, Bill of Rights, and opportunity, people from all over the world have flocked here looking for freedom and a better life. Much ink has been spilled on the vast differences between various cultures that comprise our nation. There is one thing, however, that unites people of every nation. The same Jesus shed his blood for all. He forgives all! The Lamb of God takes away the sin of the world.

Sunday's lessons are a powerful witness to the complete and unconditional forgiveness of God. The first reading recalls how Joseph’s brother’s had sold him into slavery, only to be requited years later. They were begging for food and he was second in command in Egypt. They were terrified that Joseph would take retribution. Wouldn’t you? Instead, Joseph modeled Christian forgiveness. He forgave his brothers for selling him into slavery, and invited them to relocate their families to Egypt as proof there were no hard feelings. In a memorable verse, Paul presses the Ephesians to forgive just as Christ forgave us. Finally, Jesus tells a stunning parable of a man whose hopelessly large debt was forgiven by God. However, when it comes to a few measly misdemeanors by his neighbor, he can't find it in his heart to forgive.

Forgiveness is the glue that holds every relationship together. It's the one thing that binds us to God. Without it, our sins distance us from God and exclude us from worship. How fitting, then, that when we gather for worship we confess our sins and receive God's absolution. In any culture, worship centers on the full and free forgiveness won by Christ.

God bless all who worship Jesus today in every country and culture around the world!
