2/11/2024 Ministry Sunday - Transfiguration of Our Lord

The Festival of the Transfiguration of our Lord

Twice during Jesus’ ministry God the Father audibly spoke from heaven in approval, “This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased.”  That happened first at Jesus’ baptism, his inauguration into public ministry where the Holy Spirit anointed him prophet, priest and king.  Human in every way, Jesus’ divine glory was hidden from sight.  During epiphany, we have repeatedly glimpsed Jesus’ glory through his ministry: teaching and preaching, performing miracles, healing the sick, and driving out demons.

A little more than two years had passed since his baptism.  Jesus had done nothing to dissuade his Father’s original declaration, but only served to enhance it.  As Jesus stands today high on a mountain, we get more than a glimpse of his divine glory.  For a moment he pulls back the veil of humanity to reveal his divine brilliance.  In the intensity of Jesus’ true nature, the disciples are reduced to babbling.  Moses and Elijah discuss the greater glory to come, the glory of the cross.  The Father consents, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

A little more than two thousand years have passed since his transfiguration.  The Holy Spirit has illumined the eyes of our hearts to see the glory of Jesus, the glory of the cross.  We have added our voice to the Father, and we have added our ears to his Word.  To this day, the glory of Jesus continues to shine forth through each of us, our acts service done out of love for him who loved us first.

Redeemer is pleased to welcome Pastor Evan Chartrand to our chapel.  Pastor Chartrand serves as the recruitment director of one of our WELS schools of ministry, Luther Preparatory school.  On this transfiguration day when we glimpse the glory of Jesus through his sacrificial ministry, Pastor Chartrand will encourage us to consider ministry to advance the glory of Jesus’s cross throughout the world.

It is good for us to be here.  God bless your worship.

Guest Pastor Evan Chartrand will preach on 1 Timothy 1:15 “Too Good not to Share”
